MASS Readiness Assessment

Twelve questions across the six domains of the IMO MASS Code — operating envelope, remote operations, risk assessment, software assurance, cyber resilience and human oversight. Score, gaps, and a shareable result.

Score each capability 0–4: not started → verified. 0/12 answered.

Operational Design EnvelopeMASS Code — ODD/ODE definitions

Is the intended operating area and its environmental limits (sea state, visibility, traffic density, GNSS coverage) formally documented?

Are the conditions that trigger fallback to a safe state / manual control explicitly defined and tested?

Connectivity & Remote OperationMASS Code — Remote Operations Centre requirements

Is there a documented remote-operations concept (who controls, from where, with what authority handover)?

Are link degradation and total connectivity loss scenarios engineered and rehearsed — not just assumed?

Risk AssessmentMASS Code — risk assessment framework

Has a structured hazard analysis (HAZID/HAZOP or equivalent) been completed for the autonomous functions?

Are risk controls traced to requirements, and is residual risk signed off at the right authority level?

Software AssuranceMASS Code — software engineering & assurance

Is there a managed software lifecycle — versioning, testing, verification/validation evidence, change control?

Are AI/ML model updates, training data provenance and performance boundaries documented and gated?

Cyber ResilienceIACS UR E26 / E27, IMO MSC-FAL.1/Circ.3

Does the design meet IACS UR E26 (resilience of ships) and E27 (on-board systems) expectations?

Are OT/IT segmentation, spoofing/jamming detection and incident response procedures in place?

Human Element & OversightMASS Code — roles, HMI, crew & remote operator competence

Are roles and responsibilities of master, remote operators and shore personnel contractually and procedurally defined?

Is there a competence/training framework for remote operators, and an HMI that keeps the human meaningfully in the loop?

What it is — and isn't

A gap screen, not a certificate.

Built on the real structure

The six domains mirror the IMO MASS Code adopted (non-mandatory) at MSC 109 in May 2025 — ODD/operating envelope, remote operations centres, risk assessment, software assurance — plus IACS UR E26/E27 cyber requirements and the human-element provisions.

What the score means

0–24% Explorer, 25–54% Foundation, 55–79% Developing, 80%+ Advanced. The score shows where your documentation and engineering evidence is thin — it says nothing about whether a flag administration would accept your concept.

What it is not

Not a certification, audit, conformity assessment or legal opinion. Real MASS readiness runs through your flag administration, recognised organisation (class), and — for remote operation centres — the coastal states in your operating area.
